Brule-St. Croix Waterway

The map below from the early 1800's shows the northward flowing Bois Brule ("Burnt-Wood") River, and indicates the portage to the St. Croix River.

The Henry Rowe Schoolcraft - Lt. James Allen Expedition of 1832 documents that this two-mile portage followed alongside a marshy area where water flowed out in both directions (north and south), serving as the source for both the Brule and the St. Croix Rivers.

Half-way along the trail is a small lake that Lt. Allen described on his map as a "Small Source L. from which the water runs both ways."

The Gordon Flowage is located by the caption "Wild Rice." Also noted on the map is the "Chip(pewa) Village & Gardens, Chief Keppameppa."

At the western end of the Gordon Flowage is Fish Dam (aka Sturgeon Fish Dam), just upstream from "Fish Dam Rapids."
